Episode one: Moving Forces

For our first podcast, Strategic Director, Eve Holt, is joined by Pete Carruthers and Elizabeth Hill from the Moving Forces team at GreaterSport.

Moving Forces helps military veterans, families and serving personnel to stay physically active by providing fun, relaxed and sociable activities all over Greater Manchester.

Listen as they discuss how prioritising the social aspect of their community has proved key to them adapting to Covid-19 whilst they work to keep Greater Manchester's Armed Forces moving during lockdown.

Episode two: The Proud Trust

Strategic Director, Eve Holt, is joined by Sally Car MBE, Operational Director at The Proud Trust.

As the largest LGBT children and young people charity in England, they provide a wide range of services such as youth groups, one to one work, project volunteering and work experience.

Listen as they discuss how The Proud Trust is adapting to support their community to keep moving and how for some people, utilising our once daily permitted outdoor exercise isn't as straightforward as it may seem.

Episode three: Active ageing

Strategic Director, Eve Holt, is joined by Beth Mitchell from GreaterSport's Active Ageing Programme, Nicola Waterworth from Greater Manchester Ageing Hub and the Centre for Ageing Better and Jane McDermott from University of Manchester's healthy ageing research group.

All three work closely together to keep adults moving in later life as part of the system working to deliver on the Age Friendly Strategy for Greater Manchester.

Episode four: Inclusive comms

Strategic Director, Eve Holt, is joined by Sarah Brown-Fraser, Marketing Communications Manager at Activity Alliance and GreaterSport trustee and CharityComms’ Inspiring Communicators Award winner.

Activity Alliance is a national charity that works with organisations to support disabled people to be active for life.

Join them as they discuss the challenges faced by disabled people to be active, and how covid-lockdown is providing new ways for disabled people to move within their own homes.

Episode five: Empower You

Strategic Director, Eve Holt is joined by Ben Andrews, founder of Empower You.

Empower You is a service working at community level which which supports disabled people to lead more active lives by supporting local community organisations to make their physical activity provision more accessible for disabled people.

Join them as they discuss the need to work across all layers of the system to enable disabled people to move more as well as the lessons from Covid-19 which can help make physical activity more accessible for all in the future.

Episode six: Healthy, active places

Strategic Director, Eve Holt, is joined by Tim Emery, Policy Officer with the Town and Country Planning Association.

They discuss what's needed ensure our communities can be designed and adapted to enable residents to make healthier choices; including the role of green infrastructure, active design, walkability and how adaptations during Covid-19 could spark positive changes for the future.

Episode seven: Mental wellbeing

Strategic Director, Eve Holt, is joined by Ruth Rosselson, Resilience Coordinator at Manchester Mind.

Ruth's work focuses around helping people manage challenges, changes in life and stress by running various courses and workshops.

Episode eight: Mental wellbeing, part two

Strategic Director, Eve Holt, is joined by Shirley Hurst and Pete Carruthers from GreaterSport.

Both Shirley and Pete are two of GreaterSport's mental health ambassadors working both internally and externally to encourage people to move more as part of how they look after their wellbeing.

Episode nine: GM Walking

Strategic Director, Eve Holt, is joined by Louise Robbins GM Walking Programme Lead at GM Moving, Charlotte McHugh, Greater Manchester Project Manager for Living Streets and Lucy Holland, Operations and Development Manager at Cartwheel Arts.

All three have been working to help communities across Greater Manchester to walk more.

As national walking month comes to an end, join them as they discuss the power of walking to help people become more active, the barriers that prevent people from walking more and what we can all do to help make Greater Manchester the country’s first walking city-region.

Episode ten: Poverty action

Strategic Director, Eve Holt, is joined by Graham Whitham, Director of Greater Manchester Poverty Action, working to tackle poverty across the city region.

GM Poverty Action work collaboratively with a range of organisations to tackle poverty at a local level here in Greater Manchester.

With people from lower incomes being less likely to be active, Eve and Graham discuss some of the challenges they face and how for many, the luxury of physical activity may not be on their radar.

They also discuss how important it is to work collaboratively across the system, co-designing alongside those with lived experience to create effective solutions.

Episode 11: Cycling

Strategic Director, Eve Holt is joined by Debbie Witton, Glynis Francis and Nick Dixon from Chorlton Bike Deliveries, a community-led delivery service set up during covid lockdown to support those who most needed help.

As Greater Manchester works to get more people walking and cycling through the development of the Bee Network, this new initiative is one example of how active travel can benefit not only us as individuals, but also the communities we live in.
