How Imam Abid and Cheadle Mosque are leading by example on physical activity

Umar Ahmed, GM Moving13 July 2026

For Muslim communities Imams do far more than lead prayer.

They are trusted pillars of support, offering religious expertise, daily guidance, and leadership.

This makes them powerful role models when it comes to health creation and physical activity.

So what does leading by example look like?

At GM Moving, we work with South Asian Muslim communities to support them to move in a meaningful way.

Our focus is on system change because South Asian Muslim communities are often underserved and physically inactive, this is leading to serious health inequalities.

We work directly with key advocates within faith organisations to enable movement in everyday life, and taking a whole mosque approach is what creates lasting impact.

It isn’t just about organising one off events or targeted classes for young people, it’s about weaving movement into the daily life of those who attend the mosque.

An Imam who is physically active is in a great position to  talk about the health benefits of moving more. It bridges the gap between faith and physical well-being, showing the community that taking care of your body is a natural extension of looking after your spiritual health.

In Cheadle, Stockport, Imam Abid leads by example. By championing movement in his own life, he has helped unlock new opportunities for his congregation to get moving, proving that faith and an active lifestyle go hand in hand.

This has led to a more active community who see movement as part of religion and has led so many exciting opportunities including the Fajr Club.

Whether he is competing in a HYROX, smashing a padel tennis ball, playing football, or clocking up miles cycling with the Fajr Club; it all sends a positive message around movement and Islam.
