The GM Older People’s Network (OPN) has begun using parkrun to support their members make space for connection and movement within their busy lives.
The very first GMOPN parkrun took place at Chadderton Hall in Oldham with attendees running and walking the 5k course whilst others provided support from the sidelines.
The Greater Manchester Older People’s Network is for people aged 50 and over and organisations who want to participate, connect and make a difference.
The network works to challenge ageism and promote a more positive view of ageing that recognises everyone’s contributions, experience and expertise.
“I’m a big supporter of parkrun. It’s a brilliant way to bring people of all ages and abilities together, whether they’re running, walking, cheering, or volunteering.
Alex Burgess, Development Worker at GM OPN
The OPN hopes to visit parkruns across all ten Greater Manchester boroughs and build a group of older people who would like to move, connect, and join in with their local community.
Alex Burgess, Development Worker at GM OPN, said:
“We enjoyed a beautiful September morning getting out, getting moving, and spending time together in the community. Thank you to the volunteers who make these events possible.
“I’m excited to build on this through the Greater Manchester Older People’s Network, inviting more older people to get involved in a relaxed, welcoming way.”
The next GMOPN parkrun will be at Alexandra Park, Manchester on Saturday 28 November. You can register to join here or reach out to us at gmopn@macc.org.uk or 0161 834 9823.
