During the week, partners across GM have shared stories of some of the work taking place to enable active lives for all across Greater Manchester. These include;
- The launch of Bury’s first parkrun.
- GM hosting a national partner event to start to understand what integrating physical activity into health and care systems looks like in place across the Active Partnerships Network.
- The launch of ‘Confidence walks’ in Stockport to support those with Long Term Health Conditions.
- A visit from the Department for Education to two Oldham Schools to see how they’ve used their Opening School Facilities funding. 50 schools across GM have been supported through this funding this year.
- How Be Well Wigan has been supporting individuals to overcome issues such as drug and alcohol addiction through physical activity – in partnership with We Are With You.

To end the week our CEO, Hayley Lever has shared her reflections on the year;
“This year’s data and stories show the determination, energy and commitment of people everywhere to deliver the GM Moving mission of Active Lives for All, as we continue to recover from the pandemic, close key inequality gaps. Evaluation of the approach gives us courage and confidence: growing a movement for movement is the key, and we all have a part to play in removing barriers.
“It has been another challenging year with external forces that threaten the work we are all doing to support good lives for all. People and communities are struggling financially, still suffering the health and social impacts of the pandemic and concerned about global issue of climate change. The GM Moving mission is impacted by all these things and the conditions are challenging. And every day, people across our communities and system doing a phenomenal job to support healthy, happy, productive lives.
“As we come to the end of 2023, I am reminded that our people are our biggest strength and opportunity for change. If we continue to support and care for each other and work to create the conditions for change, together we can address the challenge of inactivity and inequality, supporting people to find meaning, joy and value in an active life- by designing moving back into life and growing our movement for movement together.
“I would like to offer my personal thanks to everyone who plays a part – in voluntary and paid roles, at home, at work and in their community.”
