With 2022 drawing to a close, GM Moving partners have celebrating their fantastic achievements in ensuring Active Lives for All over the past 12 months.

Activity levels in Greater Manchester were particularly hard hit by the covid-19 pandemic but green shoots are appearing as rates recover at a faster rate here than the national average.

This was further evidenced through the release of the latest Active Lives data from Sport England which showed that children’s activity levels are now above pre-pandemic levels.

In recognition of those who have worked so hard to support people to lead active lives, partners across the city region have sharing their successes from 2022 with the hashtag #GMMoving.

GreaterSport, for example, shared the story of the Pakeeza Women’s Group (pictured above) and how Together Fund investment has supported their community to move more and be active.

Elsewhere, Founder of After Breast Cancer Diagnosis, Jo Taylor, has demonstrated how she uses Nordic Walking as a tool to support those, like herself, who have been diagnosed with breast cancer.

And in Stockport, The Seashell Trust and Life Leisure UK have been increasing swimming opportunities for children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities across Stockport.

Some local boroughs have also held Awards ceremonies in their areas over recent weeks to celebrate individuals and groups making a big impact in their communities.

Rochdale held their Sports and Culture Awards, MCR Active hosted the Manchester Sports Awards while Wigan Council and Active Tameside held the Believes Sports Awards and the Sport and Physical Activity Awards respectively.

Hayley Lever, Exec Lead GM Moving and CEO GreaterSport, said:

“December is always a great opportunity to look back at the successes of the past year and it’s obvious we have lots to celebrate across Greater Manchester.

“It is such an inspiration to be able to see, hear and feel the phenomenal work done by people, community groups and partners in every borough on a daily basis and to continue to see the signs of recovery in children, young people and adults active lives data.”

“We all know that there are still significant inequalities in terms of physical activity engagement in our city region and there is lots to do to ensure everyone can live an active life.

“Supporting Active Lives for All will ensure extensive and wide-ranging benefits across our city region and I’m really excited to see the work of all GM Moving partners in 2023.”
