Emily Wilkins

Job role: People & Leadership Lead

I work with minoritised communities to identity and reduce the barriers they face to getting and staying physically active. I lead on three main projects: volunteering, trans inclusion, and our Tackling Inequalities Network. My work also leads me to regularly collaborate with our Place Partnerships, Children & Young People, and Sport Partnerships teams, on a wide range of projects.
Volunteering can be a great way for someone to get more active and help others to do the same. But volunteering is often set up and run in ways that make it inaccessible to many people. To tackle this, I convene our Volunteering Community of Practice, where people from across sports, VCSE organisations, and local Government come together to help make volunteering more accessible and enjoyable for all. You can read more about our volunteering work here.
Our work with LGBT Foundation showed that transgender and non-binary people have tough times getting and staying active. I’m leading GM Moving’s response to LGBT Foundation’s report, working with local, regional, and national partners to put the report’s recommendations into practice. I’m also overseeing our partnership with The Proud Trust, as they look to learn more about trans and non-binary children and young people’s experiences of sport, physical activity, and movement.
My final focus area is convening our Tackling Inequalities Network. Here, we bring together people who are working to reduce a wide range of inequalities in sport and physical activity. At meetings, members share their experiences and learnings from working at grassroots sports clubs, VCSE organisations, National Governing Bodies (NGBs) and more; we then build partnerships from our unique experiences to help reduce inequalities. Professional Background:

Before joining GM Moving, I spent two years working at LGBT Foundation. Here, I worked in policy and research, mainly focusing on protecting and promoting trans rights. I also managed the Mayor of GM’s LGBTQ+ advisory panel. During my last six months at LGBT Foundation, I moved into a training role, educating others on all things LGBTQ+.

I moved to Manchester from my hometown of Bristol in 2021, after getting a Geography degree from the University of Oxford. Sport, physical activity and movement has always been a huge part of my life with some of my happiest memories on a sports pitch. I feel really lucky to be able to spread this joy  through my role here at GM Moving.

How movement brings me joy: Outside of work, I spend my weekends standing in a field, hitting and chasing a cricket ball. Some weeknights, you can also catch me standing between two posts and throwing my body in the way of a larger and softer (foot)ball. I also love to chase a frisbee, and chase my dreams of becoming a professional Mölkky player.
