Returning for its 19th year The Greater Manchester Sports Awards continue to recognise the incredible achievements and dedication towards physical activity and sport across the County.

The 10 boroughs of Greater Manchester hold their own awards and the winners from eight categories are invited to the Greater Manchester event but this year will see two awards presented at Greater Manchester level only.

These two awards are;

  • The Greater Manchester Mayor’s Award. Returning for its second year this award will be judged and presented by Mayor Andy Burnham and aims to recognise an individual or organisation who shows outstanding commitment to Greater Manchester Moving and their target to achieve 75% of people active or fairly active by 2025.
  • The Active Workplace Award. With employees spending 60% of their waking day at work there is a role for workplaces to support and encourage their workforce to move more during their day. This is why The Active Workplace Award has been included into the Greater Manchester Awards for the first time… to recognise GM workplaces who are supporting, encouraging and enabling their workforce to move more to improve physical and mental wellbeing.

The finalists for these awards will join the local finalists from the other eight categories (changing lifestyle, club of the year, young sports achiever of the year, unsung hero, volunteer of the year, school commitment to PE and sport award, workforce advocate and initiative of the year) at the prestigious event on Friday 15th November where there will be a guest speaker, a 3 course meal and a celebration of the work taking place across our County.

Nominations for both these awards have opened this morning (1st August) and will close at 5pm on Wednesday 18th September.

The short video below highlights the winners of the Greater Manchester Mayor’s Award 2018 – The Greater Manchester Ability Counts League. The League is a volunteer-run multi-impairment football league for all ages, genders and abilities. With over 50 teams from across Greater Manchester and the North West, the league provides the opportunity for disabled footballers to get active and socialise, where many would not do otherwise.
