In order to support GM Moving’s Walking City Region Ambition (to support as many people as possible to walk every day in Greater Manchester) accessible and family friendly short walking routes are being identified and mapped on the Go Jauntly App.

It is hoped this will support individuals to discover local routes and encourage increased walking.

Specifically, the approach aims to:

  • Identify and promote, via an easy-to-use smartphone app, 15-20 walking short walking routes.
  • These routes aim to be 1-3km in length and fully accessible for wheelchair users.
  • These routes will be decided in consultation with partners from local community groups and local authorities.
  • App training sessions for local community groups will be provided so additional walks can be uploaded on an ongoing basis.
  • Identify what other tools aside from the app may be useful in opening out the identified routes to groups that may be more resistant to using a smartphone app.
  • Provide free downloadable routes for offline use

Five areas have been recruited for this initial project:

  1. Bolton (Sport in Bolton)
  2. Rochdale (Big Life Group)
  3. Salford (Salford Community Leisure / Salford CVS)
  4. Manchester (McrActive)
  5. Oldham (Northern Roots)

Who’s working on this approach?
