Activity Alliance has released its latest engagement fact sheet: supporting disabled people from low-income households to be active. It is the latest in a collection of resources that aim to enable partners to be more effective in supporting disabled people to be active.

Research from Sport England shows that disabled people from lower socioeconomic groups are much more likely to be physically inactive than disabled people from higher socioeconomic groups (43% vs 29%).

This new fact sheet provides insight on how deprivation affects some disabled people’s lives. It explores the relationship between poverty and disability and, how both the causes and consequences of deprivation can impact a person’s desire, choice and opportunity to be active. For example:

  • On average, disabled people take home £200 less a week than non-disabled people
  • Disabled people in lower socioeconomic groups are less likely to have positive perceptions about physical activity and its outcomes
  • Two in five disabled people say the fear of losing their disability benefits prevents them from being active

The fact sheet covers the following topics:

  • Poverty among disabled people
  • Activity levels among low socioeconomic groups
  • How low socioeconomic status impacts activity - factors that can influence disabled people
  • Considerations for successful engagement and delivery.
