The latest Active Lives results published by Sport England show that 67.9% of adults in Wigan are active for at least 30 minutes a week, equating to 182,400 adults moving; a decrease of 4,700 from the survey 12 months ago.
As we age, inactivity (less than 30mins a week) increases, with older adults being more than twice as likely to be inactive, 75+ years 54% and 55+ years 36.8% compared to 16-34 year olds 18.7% in GM.
Six in ten children and young people in Greater Manchester are not active enough. 35.8% of children and young people, on average, do less than 30 minutes of activity each day, with only 39.9% doing at least 60 minutes or more.
6 in 10 children and young people in England do not do enough sport and physical activity. This was the main finding from Sport England's first release of the Active Lives Children and Young People Survey results back in December.
There are some stark gender inequalities in Greater Manchester. Statistics tell us that men are more active than women. In Greater Manchester, the gap between inactive males (25.5%) and inactive females (27.9%) is 2.4%. There was a slight gap decrease of 0.8% between November 2015-2016 and November 2017-2018. However, there is still much to be done.
People with a long-term disability or health condition are twice as likely to be inactive as those without. Worryingly, in Greater Manchester inactivity levels across this group are higher than national average figures.
